A struggling salesman takes custody of his son as he's poised to begin a life-changing professional career.

The Quartile Take

Will Smith delivers a career-best dramatic performance, carrying the emotional weight of this true-story rags-to-riches narrative with raw authenticity, complemented by genuine chemistry with his real-life son Jaden. The cinematography capably captures San Francisco's contrasts between wealth and poverty without being particularly distinctive. The plot follows a fairly conventional inspirational underdog arc — hardship piled upon hardship leading to triumphant breakthrough — offering little structural surprise. The ending is emotionally satisfying but predictable given its biographical basis. Novelty suffers most, as the film treads well-worn inspirational drama territory without a singular cinematic voice to set it apart.
