When the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and his flirtatious wife Caitlin sweep into war-torn London, the last thing they expect is to bump into Dylan's childhood sweetheart Vera. Despite her joy at seeing Dylan after so many years, Vera is swept off her feet by a dashing officer, William Killick, and finds herself torn between the open adoration of her new found beau and the wily charms of the exotic Welshman.
The Edge of Love is a handsomely mounted period piece anchored by strong performances from Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller, who bring genuine chemistry and tension to their roles. The cinematography captures wartime London and Wales with appropriate atmosphere. However, the plot meanders considerably, struggling to build dramatic momentum around Dylan Thomas as a supporting character rather than a true protagonist, which undermines the biographical framing. The romantic entanglements feel familiar and the film never fully distinguishes itself from other mid-century British period dramas, making its novelty fairly limited. The ending, dealing with the court martial and its aftermath, carries some emotional weight but feels rushed and inconclusive given the buildup.
