Cadillac Records (2008)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

The story of sex, violence, race and rock and roll in 1950s Chicago, and the exciting but turbulent lives of some of America's musical legends, including Muddy Waters, Leonard Chess, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Etta James and Chuck Berry.

The Quartile Take

Cadillac Records is elevated primarily by its performances — Beyoncé's Etta James and Mos Def's Chuck Berry are standouts, and Adrien Brody brings unexpected depth as Leonard Chess. The film covers an undeniably rich chapter of American music history with genuine passion. However, the narrative structure is episodic and somewhat superficial, jumping between legends without giving any single story enough room to breathe. Cinematography is competent period fare without distinctive visual ambition. The ending feels rushed and emotionally undercooked given the scope of the story being told, leaving several character arcs unresolved or hastily concluded.
