The Last Detail (1973)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Two Navy men are ordered to bring a young offender to prison, but decide to show him one last good time along the way.

The Quartile Take

The Last Detail is carried almost entirely by its exceptional performances — Jack Nicholson delivers one of his most raw and electric turns, with strong support from Otis Young and a heartbreaking Randy Quaid. The buddy-road-trip premise is fairly simple and familiar, though Darryl Ponicsan's source material gives it genuine character texture and thematic weight around futility, loyalty, and institutional powerlessness. Ashby's direction is unshowy and naturalistic, keeping the cinematography workmanlike rather than striking. The ending is deliberately muted and deflating — effectively so, but not revelatory. The film's distinctiveness comes from its performances and tone rather than any formal or narrative innovation.
