In the years before the Second World War, a tomboyish postulant at an Austrian abbey is hired as a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain with seven children, and brings a new love of life and music into the home.
The Sound of Music is a beloved classic with sweeping Alpine cinematography that remains genuinely stunning — the opening aerial shot alone earns its reputation. The plot is warm and engaging but follows a fairly predictable romantic arc with the Nazi escape as dramatic climax, landing solidly above average rather than exceptional. Acting is competent and charming, with Julie Andrews delivering an iconic performance that elevates the material, though supporting roles are uneven. Novelty is moderate — it perfects the Hollywood golden-age musical formula with considerable craft and a distinctive setting, but it operates well within established genre conventions. The ending, while emotionally satisfying and historically grounded, is fairly straightforward as a resolution.
