Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating
A ruthless real estate agent discovers a passion for piano and auditions with help from a young virtuoso, but the pressures of his corrupt career threaten to derail his musical aspirations.
Jacques Audiard's remake of 'Fingers' is elevated primarily by Romain Duris's raw, kinetic performance and Stéphane Fontaine's restless, handheld cinematography that pulses with nervous energy. The dual-world premise — criminal real estate underworld vs. classical piano redemption — is engaging but somewhat familiar in its thematic tensions. The supporting cast, particularly the piano teacher played by Linh-Dan Pham, adds texture. The ending is tonally ambiguous and slightly unresolved, fitting but not wholly satisfying. As a remake, it doesn't claim radical originality, though Audiard's neo-noir sensibility gives it a distinctly French urgency.
