Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
A woman tries to exonerate her brother's murder conviction by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.
Oculus offers a clever dual-timeline structure and an intriguing premise around a haunted mirror artifact, elevating it above typical haunted house fare. The acting is competent, particularly from Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites. The cinematography handles the blending of timelines reasonably well, though nothing visually extraordinary. The mirror concept is fairly distinctive within the genre. However, the ending is a significant weak point — it opts for a bleak, somewhat anticlimactic conclusion that feels more defeatist than earned, undermining the tension built throughout.
