We Are What We Are (2013)

The Parkers, reclusive people who cling to ancient customs, find their secret lives threatened when a torrential downpour and the death of the family matriarch forces daughters Iris and Rose to assume special responsibilities.

The Quartile Take

Jim Mickle's slow-burn American remake of the Mexican original trades in restrained rural Gothic atmosphere over overt horror. Cinematography is a genuine standout — the rain-soaked, muted palette and deliberate framing create oppressive dread with real craft. The performances, particularly from Ambyr Childers and Julia Garner, are committed and grounded, though the material constrains their range. The plot is methodical and mood-driven, which rewards patient viewers but can feel airless. As a remake it inherits some of its predecessor's distinctiveness, but Mickle's Americana recontextualization adds genuine texture. The ending delivers a satisfying, darkly cathartic payoff that elevates the slow build preceding it.
