Anthony and Dolores Montelli, along with their four children, move into their dream house in Amityville and are immediately plagued by a string of paranormal experiences. When the abusive Anthony wrongly places the blame on the children, Dolores recruits a local Catholic priest to exorcise the house.
Amityville II: The Possession is a competent but uneven horror sequel/prequel that blends the haunted house formula with demonic possession and family dysfunction. The plot borrows heavily from both The Amityville Horror and The Exorcist without adding much originality, and the incest subplot feels gratuitous rather than dramatically purposeful. Acting is generally weak, with performances ranging from hammy to flat. Cinematography is a modest bright spot — director Damiano Damiani brings some Italian genre flair with fluid camerawork and decent atmospheric tension. The ending, an exorcism sequence that feels derivative of better films, fails to deliver a satisfying payoff. Overall it sits firmly in B-horror territory.
