Josie, the daughter of the town's wealthiest businessman, faces problems at home and wishes to leave town but is disoriented. Her decision is finalized after she falls asleep in a Target dressing room. She awakens to find herself locked in the store overnight with the janitor, Jim, the town "no hoper" and liar.
Career Opportunities is a lightweight John Hughes-produced teen rom-com that coasts on the charm of Jennifer Connelly and Frank Whaley. The overnight-in-a-store premise is a reasonably fresh conceit that generates some fun set pieces (roller-skating through aisles, the robbery subplot), giving it modest novelty within the genre. Acting is serviceable with Connelly's screen presence elevating the material beyond its script. Cinematography is competent, making decent use of the Target store setting with some playful lighting. The plot is thin and episodic, relying heavily on contrived coincidences and character inconsistencies typical of Hughes productions that didn't quite land. The ending feels rushed and unearned, resolving both the romantic and personal-growth arcs too neatly given the minimal development preceding it.
