Creepshow 2 (1987)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Three macabre tales from the latest issue of a boy's favorite comic book, dealing with a vengeful wooden Native American, a monstrous blob in a lake, and an undying hitchhiker.

The Quartile Take

Creepshow 2 is a serviceable but diminished sequel to the Romero/King original. The anthology format carries over but with only three segments instead of five, and the stories vary wildly in quality — 'Old Chief Wood'nhead' is sluggish, 'The Raft' is the standout with genuine tension and creature horror, and 'The Hitchhiker' delivers campy fun with a memorable refrain. Acting is broadly functional at best, with some notably weak performances across segments. Cinematography is workmanlike — competent for the budget but rarely inspired. As a sequel it lacks the wit and energy of its predecessor, feeling more routine despite a few effective horror moments. The wraparound animated segments add a touch of charm. The Hitchhiker's darkly ironic ending is the film's most satisfying payoff, lifting Ending slightly above the otherwise middling execution.
