Two former Olympians, one a figure skater and the other a hockey player, pin their hopes of one last shot at Olympic glory on one another. That is, of course, if they can keep from killing each other in the process...
The Cutting Edge is a charming, crowd-pleasing sports romcom that hits its genre beats with confidence and likable chemistry between its leads. The plot follows the classic opposites-attract arc without much deviation — rivals forced together who fall in love — but it executes the formula with enough wit and energy to feel engaging rather than rote. The acting is solid and appealing, with D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly generating genuine spark, though neither performance is revelatory. Cinematography is functional at best; the ice sequences are competently shot but lack the visual poetry of truly great sports films. Novelty is modest — the hockey-player-turned-figure-skater premise is a fun hook that distinguishes it within the romcom landscape, giving it a specific identity, though it remains structurally conventional. The ending delivers the expected romantic and athletic payoff (the Pamchenko spin) in a satisfying, crowd-pleasing way that rewards the setup without surprising anyone.
