The Quartile Take

The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a largely forgettable entry in the franchise that retreads familiar slasher territory without adding much of substance. The plot is a near-carbon copy of the original's setup — teens stumble into Leatherface's domain — offering little narrative innovation. Acting is a minor bright spot thanks to the early appearances of Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger, who bring some energy to their roles, though the material doesn't serve them well. Cinematography is flat and unremarkable, typical of low-budget mid-90s horror productions. Novelty is low — while there are some wild tonal swings toward black comedy, the film mostly recycles the franchise formula without a distinctive enough vision to stand apart. The ending is weak and unsatisfying, failing to deliver a memorable payoff. Overall a below-average sequel redeemed only slightly by its cast.
