A conman and his seductive partner are forced to work for a wild FBI agent, who pushes them into a world of Jersey power-brokers and the Mafia.
American Hustle thrives on its ensemble cast — Bale, Adams, Lawrence, Cooper, and Renner all deliver memorably textured performances that elevate the material, earning a genuine 4 in Acting. The plot is engaging and stylishly constructed but meanders considerably in the second act, relying heavily on character energy rather than tight narrative logic. Cinematography captures a vivid 1970s palette with confident period styling but doesn't push into truly exceptional territory. Novelty is moderate — it's a distinctive David O. Russell character piece with a strong authorial voice, but the con-artist-FBI milieu treads familiar ground and echoes Goodfellas and Boogie Nights without fully transcending them. The ending is satisfying and clever enough but feels slightly deflated given the elaborate setup, wrapping up a little too neatly.
