Hostel: Part II (2007)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Three American college students studying abroad are lured to a Slovakian hostel, and discover the grim reality behind it.

The Quartile Take

Hostel: Part II largely retreads the original's formula with a gender-flipped premise, offering little that wasn't already established. The plot is predictable and mechanical, moving characters toward their fates with minimal tension-building. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable across the board. Eli Roth's direction brings some visual competence and a few genuinely striking compositions, elevating the cinematography slightly above average. The ending delivers a darkly satisfying twist that gives the film a minor uptick in closure. Novelty suffers as this is essentially a by-the-numbers sequel recycling the same conceits, with only the gender swap and a brief glimpse into the buyer's perspective as minor additions.
