Jappeloup (2013)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A true sports story that utterly defies the odds, Duguay’s film captures the wild ups and downs of the Olympics-bound career of legendary equine star Jappeloup and his troubled rider, locked in a tense relationship with his horseman father and forever uncertain of his own skills as an equestrian

The Quartile Take

Jappeloup is a competent French biographical sports drama centered on the turbulent relationship between rider Pierre Durand and his famously difficult horse. The plot follows a fairly conventional sports-biopic arc of failure, persistence, and ultimate triumph at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, hitting familiar beats without much structural surprise. Guillaume Canet delivers a committed performance and the father-son tension adds emotional texture, though the supporting cast is serviceable rather than exceptional. The equestrian photography is well-handled and captures the athleticism of showjumping convincingly, but it doesn't transcend the visual language of the genre. Novelty is limited — it is a by-the-numbers underdog sports story distinguished mainly by its equestrian setting, which is relatively rare but not enough to make it feel singular. The ending delivers the expected cathartic Olympic gold payoff with emotional satisfaction, though it holds few surprises for anyone familiar with the real story.
