When a fisherman leaves to fight with the Greek army during World War II, his fiancée falls in love with the local Italian commander.

The Quartile Take

Captain Corelli's Mandolin is a visually lush production, with John Toll's cinematography capturing the sun-drenched beauty of Kefalonia in genuinely stunning fashion — one of the film's undisputed strengths. The acting is competent, with Penélope Cruz charming and John Hurt delivering a warm supporting performance, though Cage's accent work is divisive and undermines his role. The plot, adapted from Louis de Bernières's beloved novel, loses much of the book's complexity and political depth in translation, resulting in a fairly conventional wartime romance. The ending feels deflated and rushed, failing to deliver the emotional resonance the story demands. Overall a handsome but hollow adaptation that sits well below the source material's reputation.
