Stoic and heartbroken, Einar Gilkyson quietly lives in the rugged Wyoming ranchlands alongside his only trusted friend, Mitch Bradley. One day, the woman he blames for the death of his only son arrives at his door broke, desperate, and with a granddaughter he's never known. But even as buried anger and accusations resurface, the way is opened for unexpected connection, adventure, and forgiveness.
An Unfinished Life is a competent but fairly conventional family drama built on familiar redemption and reconciliation beats. The Wyoming setting is attractively shot but not particularly distinctive. The performances — led by Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman — are solid and grounded, lending the material more weight than the script earns on its own. The plot follows a well-worn path of estranged family members finding healing, hitting expected emotional beats without many surprises. The bear subplot adds a slight quirk but doesn't elevate the film's novelty meaningfully. The ending resolves things in a quietly satisfying if predictable manner. Overall a watchable, earnest drama that doesn't distinguish itself beyond its cast.
