An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.
The Grudge is a serviceable American remake of the Japanese horror Ju-On, competently staged but largely derivative of its source material. The plot is fragmented and non-linear in a way that feels more disorienting than clever, and the curse mechanics are underexplained. Sarah Michelle Gellar leads a passable cast, though few characters are given enough depth to make an impression. Cinematography captures some effective dread through atmosphere and shadow, leveraging the Japanese setting well, but rarely rises above genre competence. As a remake of an already-existing film with a recycled supernatural premise, novelty is genuinely low. The ending is bleak but unsatisfying, leaning on shock rather than earned resolution.
