A Mighty Heart (2007)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Based on Mariane Pearl's account of the terrifying and unforgettable story of her husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Danny Pearl's life and death.

The Quartile Take

A Mighty Heart is elevated primarily by Angelina Jolie's raw, committed performance as Mariane Pearl, widely regarded as one of her finest. The film handles its true-crime procedural structure competently, weaving together investigative threads in Karachi with emotional authenticity, though the narrative can feel fragmented. Michael Winterbottom's direction uses a handheld, docudrama aesthetic that suits the material but doesn't distinguish itself beyond functional realism. The story itself is a tragic historical account told earnestly rather than inventively, and while the subject matter is weighty and the emotional climax genuinely devastating, the film doesn't fully escape the constraints of prestige true-story filmmaking. Solid and respectful, but not particularly novel in its approach.
