These Final Hours (2014)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

What would you do on the last day on Earth? With the end of the world only hours away, the self-absorbed James heads to the ultimate party-to-end-all-parties. On his way there, he saves the life of a young girl named Rose who is searching desperately for her missing father. This simple act sets James on a path to redemption.

The Quartile Take

These Final Hours is a lean, emotionally effective Australian apocalypse film that distinguishes itself through intimate character focus rather than spectacle. The redemption arc between James and Rose is well-worn territory but executed with genuine conviction. Acting is solid, particularly Nathan Phillips and Angourie Rice, though not exceptional. The sun-bleached Perth cinematography gives the film a distinct, oppressive visual texture suited to its doom-soaked premise. The ending earns its emotional weight through restraint rather than melodrama, making it one of the stronger aspects. Novelty is middling — the 'flawed man redeemed by child in crisis' framework is familiar, but the Australian setting and unflinching peripheral brutality give it some distinctive texture compared to glossier Hollywood apocalypse fare.
