A troubled young man is drawn to a mythical place called Midian where a variety of friendly monsters are hiding from humanity. Meanwhile, a sadistic serial killer is looking for a patsy.
Clive Barker's Nightbreed is a genuinely singular vision — a monster-sympathetic dark fantasy where the creatures are the protagonists and humanity the true horror. Its world-building and creature design are inventive and unmistakably Barker. The plot has ambition but suffers from uneven pacing and studio interference that left the theatrical cut feeling fragmented. Acting is serviceable but inconsistent, with David Cronenberg's villain being a highlight. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, a casualty of the troubled production. Cinematography is competent with some evocative moments but not especially distinguished. Its novelty is its strongest suit — there's simply nothing quite like it.
