Saw II (2005)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

The chilling and relentless Jigsaw killer returns to terrorize the city once again. When a gruesome murder victim emerges with unmistakable traces of Jigsaw's sinister methods, Detective Eric Matthews is thrust into a high-stakes investigation. To his surprise, apprehending Jigsaw seems almost too easy, but what he doesn't realize is that being caught is merely another piece of Jigsaw's intricate puzzle.

The Quartile Take

Saw II competently expands the franchise by shifting from a claustrophobic two-person setup to a group survival scenario, and the twist ending delivers a satisfying gut-punch consistent with the series' style. However, the acting from most of the trapped victims is weak and unconvincing, the cinematography leans heavily on the same desaturated, grimy aesthetic established by the original without meaningful evolution, and the overall concept is largely a retread of Jigsaw's established formula rather than a genuinely fresh take. The plot holds together reasonably well for a horror sequel, buoyed by Tobin Bell's commanding presence and the layered deception around Detective Matthews.
