A law student takes a job as a night watchman at a morgue and begins to discover clues that implicate him as the suspect in a series of murders.
Nightwatch is an American remake of the 1994 Danish film of the same name by the same director (Ole Bornedal), which immediately limits its novelty. The morgue setting and night watchman premise create genuine atmosphere, and the central mystery of a law student caught up in a serial killer investigation is reasonably engaging, but the plot becomes increasingly contrived and implausible in its third act. The cast (Ewan McGregor, Nick Nolte, Patricia Arquette) is capable and brings credibility, though the material doesn't fully challenge them. Cinematography leans into moody blues and institutional cold lighting to decent effect without being especially distinctive. The ending suffers from over-the-top revelations and a resolution that feels rushed and unsatisfying, undermining tension built earlier. As a remake that rarely improves on or diverges meaningfully from its source, it remains a mid-tier genre effort — watchable but not memorable.
