This film focuses on contemporary 30- and 40-somethings trying to make sense of their lives in an age in which the old certainties have disappeared. Lorenzo and Davide make their lives together within a circle that includes Antonio and Angelica, married with children; Nerval and her policeman husband.
Saturn in Opposition is a thoughtful Italian ensemble drama by Ferzan Özpetek exploring friendship, grief, and identity among a tight-knit group of urban professionals. The performances are warm and credible, and the emotional dynamics feel authentic, but the plot follows a fairly familiar template of loss-and-solidarity that doesn't distinguish itself structurally. Cinematography is competent and intimate without being visually distinctive. The novelty is limited — while the gay relationship is treated with naturalism and sensitivity, the film doesn't break new ground in the ensemble drama genre. The ending is emotionally resonant but predictable in its bittersweet closure.
