A rancher, his clairvoyant wife and their family face turbulent years in South America.
The House of the Spirits is a sweeping multi-generational saga adapted from Isabel Allende's celebrated novel, covering political upheaval, magical realism, and family drama in Chile. The all-star international cast (Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Winona Ryder, Antonio Banderas) delivers competent but uneven performances, with the material feeling somewhat flattened compared to its source. The cinematography is handsome and period-appropriate without being particularly distinctive. The film struggles to fully translate the novel's magical realism to screen, resulting in a somewhat conventional prestige drama. The ending, dealing with the Pinochet-era coup and its aftermath, carries emotional weight but feels rushed given the epic scope of the story. Overall a respectable but underwhelming adaptation of exceptional source material.
