Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
Two siblings begin to develop special talents after they find a mysterious box of toys, and soon their parents and even their teacher are drawn into a strange new world – and find a task ahead of them that is far more important than any of them could imagine.
The Last Mimzy offers a moderately inventive sci-fi premise rooted in Henry Kuttner's short story, blending childhood wonder with ecological themes and time travel in a way that feels distinct enough to stand apart from generic family fare. However, the plot tends to meander and loses dramatic tension in its second half, and the child acting is inconsistent, with adult performances feeling underwritten and mechanical. Visually the film is competent but unremarkable, with solid effects work that doesn't particularly distinguish itself. The ending resolves too neatly and quickly, undercutting the emotional stakes that had been building throughout the story.
