Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story is a movie based on the life story of world-renowned neurosurgeon Ben Carson from 1961 to 1987.

The Quartile Take

Gifted Hands benefits enormously from Cuba Gooding Jr.'s committed and warm performance as Ben Carson, elevating what is a fairly conventional inspirational biography. The plot follows a familiar rags-to-riches, faith-and-perseverance arc that hits expected beats without much narrative surprise. Cinematography is functional TV-movie level — competent but unremarkable, with no distinctive visual choices. Novelty is modest: the medical milestones (especially the conjoined twins surgery) give the story genuine distinction from a typical biopic, but the storytelling approach is by-the-numbers. The ending delivers the expected emotional payoff of the landmark surgery, satisfying but not transcendent.
