The Fourth Kind (2009)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Since the 1960s, a disproportionate number of the population in and around Nome, Alaska, have gone missing. Despite FBI investigations, the disappearances remain a mystery. Dr. Abigail Tyler, a psychologist, may be on the verge of blowing the unsolved cases wide open when, during the course of treating her patients, she finds evidence of alien abductions.

The Quartile Take

The Fourth Kind leans hard into its pseudo-documentary conceit, blending 'archival footage' with dramatized scenes in a split-screen format that gives it some visual distinctiveness. The found-footage-adjacent approach was reasonably novel for its time and earns a modest Novelty bump. However, the plot is thin and repetitive — hypnosis sessions reveal alien contact, authorities disbelieve, cycle repeats — with little narrative development or payoff. The acting ranges from wooden to overwrought, and Milla Jovovich breaking the fourth wall to remind audiences this is 'real' undercuts rather than enhances immersion. The ending is unsatisfying and abrupt, failing to deliver on the mystery it builds. Cinematographically, the contrast between slick dramatization and grainy 'authentic' footage is handled with some craft, lifting it slightly above average in that department.
