Doug MacRay is a longtime thief, who, smarter than the rest of his crew, is looking for his chance to exit the game. When a bank job leads to the group kidnapping an attractive branch manager, he takes on the role of monitoring her – but their burgeoning relationship threatens to unveil the identities of Doug and his crew to the FBI Agent who is on their case.
The Town is a solid, well-crafted crime thriller elevated significantly by its performances, particularly Jeremy Renner's Oscar-nominated turn and Affleck's assured work both in front of and behind the camera. The Boston setting is rendered with genuine authenticity and the action sequences — especially the Fenway Park and North End chase — are tightly executed. However, the plot follows a fairly well-worn heist-romance template with few surprises, and the central love story strains credulity at times. Novelty suffers as the film treads familiar Heat-influenced territory without fundamentally distinguishing itself from the genre. The ending provides decent closure but feels somewhat predictable in its bittersweet resolution.
