Paranormal Activity (2007)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

After a young, middle-class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic but is certainly the most active in the middle of the night.

The Quartile Take

Paranormal Activity is a landmark in found-footage horror, masterfully exploiting minimalism and mundane suburban settings to generate dread. Its novelty score reflects how genuinely distinctive and influential its slow-burn, static-camera approach was — it revitalized the found-footage subgenre almost singlehandedly. Acting from the two leads feels authentically naturalistic, grounding the supernatural premise. The cinematography, while deliberately rough and handheld, uses the locked-off bedroom cam to iconic effect, making constraint feel purposeful. The plot itself is thin — essentially a couple bickering and watching footage — which limits narrative engagement. The ending delivers a visceral jolt but relies on a sudden shock that somewhat undercuts the restraint that made the film so effective.
