Get On Up (2014)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A chronicle of James Brown's rise from extreme poverty to become one of the most influential musicians in history.

The Quartile Take

Chadwick Boseman delivers a genuinely magnetic, transformative performance as James Brown, capturing his volcanic energy, charisma, and contradictions with remarkable physicality and commitment — easily the film's standout element. The non-linear structure and fourth-wall breaks add some stylistic flair that distinguishes it from a purely conventional biopic, but the narrative remains episodic and uneven, struggling to fully excavate Brown's psychology beneath the surface spectacle. Cinematography is competent and period-appropriate without being particularly inventive. The ending feels rushed and emotionally unsatisfying, failing to land the full weight of Brown's complicated legacy. Overall a solid but imperfect biopic elevated significantly by its lead performance.
