The Rebound (2009)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Upon discovering her husband's infidelity, Sandy leaves the suburbs and moves into the city. There, she befriends Aram, a guy whose wife only married him so she could get a green card. Sandy hires Aram to be her nanny, and it isn't long until Aram and Sandy find out they get along wonderfully and start to date. But is their relationship real or is it, in fact, just a rebound for both of them?

The Quartile Take

The Rebound is a fairly by-the-numbers romantic comedy that hits familiar beats: wronged woman starts over in the city, meets a younger man, romance blossoms against the odds. The older woman/younger man dynamic gives it a mild twist, but the script doesn't push that premise into genuinely fresh territory. Acting from Catherine Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha is competent and reasonably charming, elevating the middling material somewhat. Cinematography is standard NYC romcom fare — pleasant but unremarkable. The ending tries to subvert the typical romcom resolution by separating the leads for years before reuniting them, which shows some ambition, but the execution feels rushed and unearned rather than emotionally satisfying. Overall a watchable but forgettable entry in the genre.
