A young man in a personal tailspin flees the US to Italy, where he sparks up a romance with a woman harboring a dark, primordial secret.

The Quartile Take

Spring is a genuinely singular film — a Lovecraftian romantic horror set against the sun-drenched Italian coast, blending genres in a way that feels completely its own. The cinematography is lush and atmospheric, making stunning use of the Italian landscape to contrast the creeping body-horror undercurrent. The novelty is its greatest strength: the romantic drama and cosmic horror mesh in a way rarely attempted or achieved, giving it a voice that's hard to compare to anything else. The lead performances are warm and naturalistic, though neither is transcendent. The plot is intentionally slow-burn and character-driven, which works thematically but can feel slight in its second act. The ending is emotionally satisfying if somewhat convenient, resolving the tension in a way that prioritizes heart over horror — a reasonable but not daring choice.
