Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
Eight years after their daughter Cassandra's abduction tore them apart, an estranged couple discover disturbing clues that indicate that she is still alive.
The Captive suffers from a convoluted, non-linear structure that feels more confusing than clever, undermining what could have been a gripping thriller. Atom Egoyan's typically cold, detached style gives the film a certain visual polish and the cast—including Ryan Reynolds and Scott Speedman—delivers competent performances, but the material doesn't give them much to work with. The premise of a missing child found years later via dark web surveillance is not particularly fresh, and the film recycles familiar procedural beats without adding distinctive flavour. The ending fails to pay off the emotional investment the film demands, leaving the resolution feeling unsatisfying and somewhat implausible.
