The Quartile Take

Saw is a landmark horror-thriller that redefined the genre with its ingenious premise, moral puzzle-box structure, and one of cinema's most genuinely shocking twist endings. The plot is cleverly constructed, feeding information carefully before detonating a finale that recontextualizes everything. The Jigsaw concept was wholly original, spawning a decade-long franchise and countless imitators — its novelty is undeniable. The low-budget cinematography has a grimy, claustrophobic atmosphere that suits the material even if it lacks technical polish. Acting is serviceable, with Cary Elwes and Danny Glover uneven at times but Tobin Bell's Jigsaw presence is unforgettable. The ending remains one of the great horror-thriller payoffs.
