The End of the Tour (2015)

The story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace, which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace's groundbreaking epic novel, 'Infinite Jest.'

The Quartile Take

The End of the Tour is a quiet, dialogue-driven two-hander that lives or dies on its performances, and Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel deliver exceptional work — Segel's portrayal of Wallace is a career-best, nuanced and deeply felt without tipping into caricature. The plot is deliberately minimal, essentially a long conversation across five days, which works as character study but limits dramatic momentum. Cinematography is functional and understated, befitting the Midwestern winter setting without being particularly distinguished. Novelty is moderate — the talking-heads road-trip interview format has precedents, though the subject matter (Wallace's celebrity anxiety, his fears about fame and authenticity) gives it a singular intellectual texture. The ending, tied to Wallace's real-life death, carries emotional weight but relies heavily on foreknowledge rather than earned narrative closure.
