Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
A couple begins to experience terrifying supernatural occurrences involving a vintage doll shortly after their home is invaded by satanic cultists.
Annabelle is a by-the-numbers horror spin-off that leans heavily on jump scares and a formulaic possession narrative. The plot is thin and predictable, recycling haunted-object tropes without meaningful development. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with characters that feel underdeveloped. Cinematography is competent and occasionally effective in building atmosphere, benefiting from the same production house aesthetic as The Conjuring. Novelty is low — the film adds little new to the evil-doll or demonic-possession subgenres and feels largely derivative of its source material. The ending resolves the conflict in a rushed, unsatisfying manner that undercuts any tension built earlier.
