In 19th-century France, doctor's wife Emma Bovary seeks to escape her dull provincial life through various extramarital affairs and extravagant spending, leading to tragic consequences.
Mia Wasikowska brings some grace to the title role and the film is visually sumptuous with lush period cinematography, but this 2015 adaptation adds little new to the many prior versions of Flaubert's classic. The screenplay flattens much of the novel's psychological depth, the supporting performances are uneven, and the ending, while faithful, lacks the emotional devastation the source material demands. A competent but unremarkable retelling of a frequently adapted story.
