Fathers and Daughters (2015)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A Pulitzer-winning writer grapples with being a widower and father after a mental breakdown, while, 27 years later, his grown daughter struggles to forge connections of her own.

The Quartile Take

Fathers and Daughters is a competent but fairly conventional dual-timeline drama exploring trauma, grief, and father-daughter bonds. The plot structure—intercutting between past and present—is serviceable but not especially fresh, and the emotional beats feel familiar. The acting, featuring Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried, is earnest and engaging without being truly remarkable. Cinematography is polished and professional but unremarkable. The narrative premise of a broken writer and his emotionally scarred daughter has been well-trodden territory, keeping Novelty low. The ending offers emotional resolution without surprising or transcending the genre's conventions.
