Rob-B-Hood (2006)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

For never-do-well compulsive gambler Fong, there's only one thing more fearsome than debtors at his doorstep - having to coax a crying baby. But what if the baby becomes his golden goose to fend off his debtors? Can he overcome his phobia of diapers, milk bottles, and cloying lullabies?

The Quartile Take

Rob-B-Hood is a mid-tier Jackie Chan vehicle that blends baby comedy with action set-pieces in a fairly familiar Hong Kong formula. The plot is charming in stretches but predictable, following well-worn redemption arcs. Chan and Louis Koo bring energy to their performances but the ensemble work is uneven. The cinematography is competent Hong Kong commercial fare without distinctive visual ambition. The baby-kidnapping-comedy premise is not particularly fresh, echoing numerous prior films, and the tonal shifts between slapstick and earnest drama feel somewhat forced. The ending leans heavily on sentimentality in a way that feels unearned given the film's lighter earlier tone.
