Danny Collins (2015)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

An ageing hard-living 1970s rock star decides to change his life when he discovers a 40-year-old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon.

The Quartile Take

Danny Collins is elevated primarily by Al Pacino's warm, charismatic central performance, supported by a strong ensemble including Annette Bening and Bobby Cannavale. The premise—a rock star rediscovering himself via a lost John Lennon letter—is genuinely intriguing and rooted in a real story, lending it modest novelty. The plot, however, follows a fairly predictable redemption arc with few surprises. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable, typical of mid-budget character dramas. The ending is earnest but somewhat conventional, wrapping things up a touch too neatly.
