Room (2015)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

Held captive for 7 years in an enclosed space, a woman and her young son finally gain their freedom, allowing the boy to experience the outside world for the first time.

The Quartile Take

Room is elevated almost entirely by its extraordinary performances, especially Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, whose chemistry and emotional depth are genuinely exceptional. The plot is compelling and well-structured, particularly in its bold decision to shift focus after the escape — exploring trauma, reintegration, and the complexity of freedom. Cinematography is competent and effectively claustrophobic in the early sections but not especially distinctive. Novelty is moderate: while the child's-eye perspective on captivity and the post-rescue second half are thoughtful departures from typical thriller territory, the film doesn't reinvent its form. The ending is emotionally resonant but somewhat quiet and underwritten, resolving threads rather than delivering a truly memorable final statement.
