The Salvation (2014)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

In 1870s America, a peaceful American settler kills his family's murderer which unleashes the fury of a notorious gang leader. His cowardly fellow townspeople then betray him, forcing him to hunt down the outlaws alone.

The Quartile Take

The Salvation is a competent but largely derivative revisionist Western. The revenge plot hits familiar beats—grieving settler versus ruthless gang, cowardly townspeople, lone-wolf justice—without meaningfully subverting or enriching the genre. The Danish cast (Mads Mikkelsen, Eva Green) delivers restrained, solid performances, with Mikkelsen's stoic presence elevating what is otherwise a thin script. Cinematography is clean and atmospheric, evoking classic Westerns with decent production design, but rarely achieves anything visually memorable. The ending resolves predictably with little emotional payoff beyond genre satisfaction. Novelty is low given how closely it adheres to well-worn revenge-Western templates despite its European production origin.
