The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A newsman works with a blind puzzle-solver to uncover a deadly conspiracy linked to a genetic research facility.

The Quartile Take

Dario Argento's second giallo is a competent but somewhat workmanlike entry in the genre. The central pairing of a journalist and a blind puzzle-solver is a clever conceit, and the genetic research angle gives the mystery a distinctive scientific edge for its era. However, the plot mechanics are more convoluted than clever, and the resolution feels underwhelming compared to Argento's better work. The acting is serviceable with Karl Malden lending credibility but little of the cast truly elevates the material. Cinematography is stylish in spots but lacks the full visual bravado of later Argento. As a giallo it hits genre marks without reinventing them. The ending is the weakest element — the rooftop climax and reveal feel rushed and unsatisfying, a notable step down from the intrigue that preceded it.
