The Rizzos, a family who doesn't share their habits, aspirations, and careers with one another, find their delicate web of lies disturbed by the arrival of a young ex-con brought home by Vince, the patriarch of the family, who is a corrections officer in real life, and a hopeful actor in private.
City Island is a charming ensemble comedy-drama elevated well above its modest premise by strong, naturalistic performances—Andy Garcia leads a cast that commits fully to the comedic and emotional beats of a dysfunctional family riddled with secrets. The plot is entertaining and well-structured around its intersecting lies, though it never transcends its theatrical origins or surprises deeply. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable, a straightforward TV-movie aesthetic that serves but never distinguishes the material. Novelty is modest—the dysfunctional-family-secrets premise is familiar territory, though the specific Bronx Italian-American milieu and the acting-class subplot give it some personality. The ending resolves warmly and satisfyingly if somewhat predictably, tying all the threads together in crowd-pleasing fashion without fully earning its catharsis.
