The Quartile Take

War for the Planet of the Apes is a remarkably somber and ambitious blockbuster. The plot is a genuinely layered character study — Caesar's internal struggle between vengeance and leadership elevates it well above typical franchise fare, earning a 4. Andy Serkis's motion-capture performance is extraordinary, as is Woody Harrelson's menacing Colonel, making Acting a clear 4. Michael Seresin's cinematography is stunning, with sweeping snow-laden landscapes and intimate close-ups that give the film an almost classical western/war epic feel, earning a 4. Novelty scores a 3 — while the film is distinctive in its emotional gravity for a sci-fi blockbuster, it is the third entry in a rebooted franchise and leans heavily on familiar mythic and war-film archetypes (Apocalypse Now echoes are explicit). The ending, while emotionally resonant in Caesar's death and the apes' arrival at their promised land, is somewhat telegraphed and follows a well-worn sacrificial-leader arc, landing at a 3.
