The Quartile Take

Concert for George is a deeply moving tribute concert documentary celebrating the life of George Harrison. The 'plot' is minimal as expected for a concert film—a loose memorial structure rather than a narrative arc. The performances, however, are exceptional: Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, and Dhani Harrison among others deliver genuinely heartfelt, high-caliber musicianship that elevates this well above the typical tribute concert. Cinematography is competent and serves the material—twelve camera positions at the Royal Albert Hall capture the performances well without being particularly adventurous. Novelty is moderate; while tribute concerts are a known format, the singular combination of artists, the Monty Python comedy interlude, the Indian classical music segments honoring Harrison's spiritual side, and the emotional weight of the occasion give it a distinctive character. The ending—culminating in 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and the rousing finale—is emotionally devastating and genuinely memorable, earning top marks.
