Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage.

The Quartile Take

Guardians Vol. 2 leans heavily into emotional character work around found family and Peter's paternal origins, which gives it more thematic depth than a typical MCU sequel. However, the plot is overstuffed with subplots (Nebula/Gamora, Yondu/Rocket) that dilute the main narrative, and Ego as a villain is serviceable but not memorable. Acting is solid across the board with Pratt and Russell doing decent work, and Rooker earns genuine pathos as Yondu, but no performance truly elevates the material. Visually it is colorful and maximalist but lacks the fresh vibrancy of the first film. As a sequel it largely recycles the tone and humor of its predecessor with diminishing returns on novelty — it is a competent continuation rather than a distinctive evolution. The ending, while emotionally effective in Yondu's sacrifice, feels somewhat predictable in its resolution.
