During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
The Martian is a slick, competent survival thriller elevated by strong location photography and visual effects that convincingly render Mars as both beautiful and hostile — cinematography is a genuine standout. The plot is engaging and unusually optimistic for survival sci-fi, but follows a fairly predictable problem-solution structure lifted closely from Andy Weir's novel. Damon leads capably and the ensemble is solid but rarely transcendent — acting is functional and charming rather than remarkable. Novelty is moderate: the cheerful, MacGyver-esque tone distinguishes it from grimmer space films, but the survival-against-odds framework is familiar. The ending is satisfying and emotionally earned but not surprising or particularly daring. Overall a well-crafted, crowd-pleasing film that excels visually without breaking new ground narratively.
